26 August '10: Number of immigrants living in the UK long-term soars by 20%
The number of immigrants choosing to live in the UK long-term soared by more than 20 per cent last year, official figures today show. ONS statistics show a 37 per cent rise in immigrants granted settlement in the UK between June 2009 and June 2010 and the number of visas issued to students increased 35 per cent to more than 362,000. full story

The media industry (PR and journalism) is viewed as the most difficult profession for ethnic minority candidates to find a job, according to a survey by diversity charity Race for Opportunity.The report, called Aspiration and Frustration, found that 31% named it as the most difficult profession to break into, and 30% were put off persuing a career in the industry. full story
22 July '10: One in Four Babies born to Migrants
ONS statistics showed that almost 25% of babies are born to foreign mothers.The three most common countries of origin of foreign-born mothers are Pakistan, Poland and India. Last year, the ONS calculated that women born in Britain will average 1.84 children each during their lifetimes, while women who came to this country from abroad will have 2.51 children during their lives. full story

Halal meat for Muslims is a well-known commodity, but now halal make-up is making its way onto shopping lists. Business has been booming for the UK's first company to sell halal-certified cosmetics, which has been trading for three months. The cosmetics have been welcomed by many Muslim women who want to follow fashion trends and their faith, but some question whether make-up needs to be halal. full story

9 June '10: UK government tightens rules on immigrants ability to speak English.
Ministers are bringing forward to the autumn measures requiring many immigrants marrying UK citizens to prove they have a command of English.
The measures, which Labour had planned to introduce in July 2011, will apply to partners coming to the UK from areas outside the EU, such as South Asia. full story
